นักบุญ เบเนดิกต์ อธิการ (480-547)
ระลึกถึงวันที่ 11 กรกฎาคม
จากหนังสือบทสนทนาของนักบุญเกรกอรี่ องค์ใหญ่ ทำให้เราสามารถรู้จักชีวิตและผลงานของนักบุญ เบเนดิกต์ แห่งนอร์เชีย “บิดาแห่งชีวิตฤาษีของพระศาสนจักรตะวันตก”
นักบุญ เบเนดิกต์ ได้ละทิ้งชีวิตทางโลกของกรุงโรม ไปอยู่ที่ซูบีอาโก ในถ้ำแห่งหนึ่งเป็นเวลา 3 ปี และที่นี่เองที่ท่านได้มีประสบการณ์ของชีวิต “ฤาษี” มีคนรู้จักท่านเพียงคนเดียวเท่านั้นคือฤาษีคนหนึ่งที่คอยนำเอาอาหารมาให้ท่าน ต่อมาได้มีพวกคนเลี้ยงสัตว์ที่ไม่มีการศึกษาอะไรเลยได้มาขอร้องให้ท่านมาเป็นอธิการของพวกเขา แต่มีจุดประสงค์ไม่ดีที่วางยาพิษท่าน ทว่าในที่สุดก็มีลูกศิษย์มากมายที่ต้องการให้ท่านเป็นผู้แนะนำ
ทีแรกท่านได้ตั้งอารามขึ้นแห่งหนึ่ง ต่อมาก็ได้ตั้งอารามขึ้นอีก 12 แห่งด้วยกัน นี่แหละเป็นการให้กำเนิดชีวิตฤาษีเบเนดิกตินแบบที่เจริญชีวิตร่วมกัน วินัยฤาษีอันมีชื่อเสียงของท่านเป็นการรวมเอาประสบการณ์ชีวิตฤาษีของทางตะวันออกเข้ากับปรีชาญาณของพวกโรมันอย่างสุขุมและด้วยจิตตารมณ์ของพระวรสารโดยมีอธิการเป็นผู้นำชีวิตการสวดภาวนาการทำงานและชีวิตทางด้านสติปัญญา ซึ่งกิจกรรมทั้งหมดจะประสานเข้าด้วยกันด้วยความซื่อๆ เรียบๆ แต่ว่าแฝงไว้ด้วยความรอบคอบ, ด้วยความเคร่งครัดแต่แฝงไว้ด้วยความอ่อนโยน, ด้วยความอิสระเสรีแต่ว่าแฝงไว้ด้วยความนบนอบเชื่อฟัง
ประมาณปี 529 ได้มีการเบียดเบียนเกิดขึ้นเพราะความอิจฉาริษยา ท่านจึงต้องหลบไปอยู่ที่มอนเตคัสสิโน และท่านได้สิ้นใจที่นี่เมื่อวันที่ 21 มีนาคม 547
พวกฤาษีของท่านได้แพร่หลายกระจัดกระจายไปทั่วทวีปยุโรปและได้ทำให้ทวีปยุโรปกลับใจมาหาพระคริสตเจ้า ทั้งได้ช่วยรักษาเอกภาพทางศาสนาของทวีปยุโรปเอาไว้ด้วย เพราะฉะนั้น พระสันตะปาปาปอลที่ 6 ในปี 1964 จึงได้ประกาศยกย่องให้นักบุญ เบเนดิกต์เป็นนักบุญองค์อุปถัมภ์เอกของทวีปยุโรป การฉลองและการเคารพให้เกียรติท่านนั้นมีมาตั้งแต่สมัย โบราณ (ปฏิทินพิธีกรรมใหม่ได้เลื่อนจากวันที่ 21 มีนาคม ( เพราะอยู่ในเทศกาลมหาพรต) ให้มาฉลองในวันนี้แทน)
พวกฤาษีเบเนดิกตินได้เป็นกำลังสำคัญที่มีชีวิตชีวาในประชากรของพระเป็นเจ้าอยู่เสมอมิได้ขาด ได้เป็นผู้นำความมั่งคั่งสมบูรณ์ของชีวิตแห่งการเพ่งฌานมาให้ และเป็นตัวอย่างของ “ การสวดขับร้องเพลงสรรเสริญพระเป็นเจ้า” ในการให้บริการทางพิธีกรรม การศึกษาบรรดาปิตาจารย์ ทั้งได้ให้พระสันตะปาปาหลายองค์ด้วยกันแก่พระศาสนจักร โดยเริ่มจากนักบุญ เกรกอรี่ องค์ใหญ่ และได้ช่วยเหลือพระศาสนจักรในเวลาคับขันด้วย

Benedictin Monks’Project in Chiangmai
The slogan of the Benedictin Congregation is “Ora et Labora” (to pray and to work). It’s main task for our monks. At first, a benedictin monk is not an actived person outdoor like Dominican, Jesuit, Redemtorist or Franciscan etc…, but he prays accoding to de Holy Rules of Saint Benedict. In the heart of the Church, his principal task is to pray. He prays for himself, for the Church, for the Diocese where he’s living in and for the whole world. He lives in solitude, there are no relations of outdoor. Although isolated from the world, he maintains always contact with the world by his prayers. He also works for living. In nessity and depends on his capacbility he can build hotellerie for people who want to live with God in silence; he can build infirmary, rest-home…; or he can help the priests in the pastoral service.
In this spirit, and with the invitation of Bishop Antonio Mathiazzo at Padova in Italia, vietnamese benedictin monks, once arrived at Chiangmai, want to seed the benedictin life over this country where they try to build and to live the life according to the Holy Rules of Saint Benedict.
For the future of the Chiangmai Abbey, we will receive new candidates who love the life we live actually. The aim of our life is not priesthood. Our monks do not become all priests. Some of them stay all their life monks. We have equal rights and duty. We share the same rule.

The life of our community needs the Presence of the Eucharist so that we could live all day long with Jesus Christ during the time of liturgy as well as personal prayers.
As you have known, our house has been recenlly repaired. We have managed a room like a small chapel for this purpose, waiting in future, a genuine respectable another one.
We insist his Excellency to allow us to expose there the Eucharist.

Referring to your letter dated on October 14, 2010, requesting the consent of Chiang Mai Diocese to have the Blessed Sacrament reserved in your chapel and to hold Eucharistic celebrations regularly, we considered your request and give you the affirmative response.
According to the Code of Canon Law, art. 934.2 and 939, you may have to follow carefully for the chapel with the Blessed Sacrament reserved.

According to the invitation of Bishop Antonio Mathiazzo of PadovaDiocese, Italy, after some times visiting Thailand, Abbot Stephane and superiors of benedictin houses of Vietnam benedictin Province visited Chiangmai Diocese. They decided to found benedictin monastic life in this Diocese. They came to meet the Bishop of Chiangmai Diocese and asked him to found the benedictin life in his diocese. He agreed and He has enjoyed accepting vietnamese monks into his diocese. The 13 th April 2010, four vietnamese monks (a priest and 3 brothers) arrived in Chiang Mai. The 28 th october 2010 Bishop of Chiangmai Diocese visited, blessed the new house of the monks. At the same thing he celebrated the Mass here as declaring officially the presence of benedictin monks in Chiangmai Diocese.
